7, 1941 hostilities begin in the Pacific with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. 1942
Arthur, age 22, inducted into the Army at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Transported by train to Little Rock,
Arkansas for basic training at Camp Robinson for 6 wks. Decorated for marksmanship as a rifleman. Ordered to Eugene, Oregon
in 1942; assigned to Mechanized Calvary, Division of National Guard Tank outfit from Pennsylvania. Trained
at Coos Bay, Oregon. Sent to Ft. Ord, California for Ranger training in 1943. Reassigned
to 332 Depot Quarter Master for the 9th Amphibious Task Force for Aleutian Islands. Transported
to the Aleutians by a captured German luxury liner which took 5 days; most troops were sent on flat bottom boats which took
up to a month. Arthur advanced to Staff Sergeant as a member of the Asiatic Pacific Task Force.
Arrived on Adak Island in 1943. Attacked Japanese stronghold on Kiska Island with 30,000 U.S. soldiers
and 100 naval vessels. Occupied Kiska on August 15, 1943 until war’s end with Japan’s surrender
Sept 2, 1945. Returned to Adak for two years. Began writing pen pal in Chicago through
a cousin’s recommendation. October 1945, 30 day leave; traveled by plane to Anchorage, Alaska to
Minneapolis; by train to Natoma. Soon after met pen pal in Chicago and began courtship. Discharged
at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas November 1945. Married 6 months later to pen pal, Evelyn Stueve, in May of 1946.
